with the wigan game  just around the corner this got me thinking(which is sometimes dangerous) what is the biggest derby WIGAN OR WIRE?
personaly i have thought this over whilst trying to get to sleep and i decided on WIGAN due to the times when both clubs were allways battling it out for the trophies and recruited the worlds best players, the way we hated them for stealing offiah and not paying and for throwing us out of sl.
so for me the hatred lies with wigan and it allways envokes more passion from the terraces when these games are played.

but what are youre thoughts on the matter ?

Warrington, nothing pumps the blood more than that, on the other side possibly a little too much as we have seen previously!

,the way we hated them for stealing offiah and not paying and for throwing us out of sl.

I was under the impression that they paid us ?440,000 which (along with their new stand) virtually bankrupted them and cost them their historic ground at Central Park.

And it wasn't Wigan who got us kicked out of SL. Cas were the ones that raised the objections to us not merging while they had to, but who can blame them?

i dont know how old you are? but to suggest anythink other than warrington as our derby makes me laugh.

wigans derby was always saints and growing up was always the wire who most widnes fans grew up hating with a passion lol.

Yea,gotta be The Wire aint it.Can't recall any bother at Wigan games but always bother at Wilderspool and the HJ.Probably cos it winds em up that they've won nowt since 1993.

I do dislike wigan, but my real hatred will always be reserved for W*re. They were never competing with widnes on the pitch throughout our golden era, but even so I still cannot stand them. And the fact they they spend loads each pre season and end up with nothing gives me even greater satifaction.

WIDNES>WIRE

Times change with this one for instance 3 or 4 years ago when Turdis was around Leigh were big rivals then when it was us and Wigan at the top of the tree it was the pie eaters. Overall it has to be the Wire in all honesty if RL didn't exist which RL playing town would most Widnesians dispise.......in one Warrington

like i said earlier always the wire.

pies was disliked cos of maurice ruining the game but never a derby they was hated by most teams.

have to agree tho when we was in lower leagues before we made super league leigh did become our bitter rivals and main derby.

I think you have a point, when I was growing up and started to watch Widnes in the mid eighties, thinking back I don't ever re-call me thinking that Warrington were the big derby rivals. As life is peachey has said the big games were usually against Wigan. I think its similar to the Man Utd / Liverpool rivalry, with Fergy recently saying that the Liverpool game is the biggest game of the season and how he'd like to see Liverpool relegated. Obviously City are Utd's local rivals but due to the fact that Man City have not challenged for so long, there is no intense rivalry like there is between Utd and Liverpool. I think the point is Warrington are the local rivals, but due to our up and down fortunes, they are not always considered our big rivals.

Never being from, or lived in, Widnes the Warrington rivalry never gripped me as much as it would with people from Widnes. My old man's a Wigan fan and I used to enjoy them getting beat (even though now I'm a lot older I quite like Wigan).

The biggest derby for me was Saints. Going to school in Haydock I was surrounded by Saints fans and I was left to fight the Widnes corner on my own. Les Quirk was the bain of my life when I was at school! Damn that man!

These days I'd have to say our biggest game is Leigh.

I always thought we had two derbies. one versus Warrington played on Boxing Day and Good Friday, the other versus Saints played on New years Day and Easter Monday.  Wigan, Leigh, Salford, Oldham were games played on regular Sundays and so in my mind cannot be classed as the major derbies although they are obviously "Lancashire Derbies".

This season I would put the Salford game above the Leigh game this year as they are the bigger of those two clubs at the momnet.
