Speakman upbeat over visit of his old pals

WIDNES Vikings take on Leigh Centurions at Stobart Stadium Halton on Sunday (ko 3.00pm) in what may be considered their first meaningful test of the season.

So far the Vikings have been outclassed by Super League's Wigan in a pre-season trial and then subsequently proved far too good for National League Two outfit Blackpool Panthers in the Northern Rail Cup.

Sunday's Northern Rail clash sees them take on opponents who will be one of their main competitors in National League One this year.

As such it should provide a useful yardstick for Steve McCormack's new-look side.

One man who will be determined to do well is Widnes centre Danny Speakman who joined from the Centurions just three weeks ago.

Speakman spent part of last season on-loan at Batley following injury problems and is taking a professional approach to a game in which the Centurions will start as favourites.

He said: "It's just another game to me really. I've been coming back from injury so I want to get as many games under my belt as possible.

"Being the underdogs isn't a bad thing because it means there is less pressure on us.

"Leigh have got some good players but it's a question of how they turn up on the day. I think we'll do all right.?

Despite having been at the Stobart Stadium Halton for such a short time, Speakman has been impressed, particularly by developments behind the scenes led by the club's new chairman.

He added: "We've got some good players and I'm sure in time the team will speak for itself.

"But I think off the field is where Widnes are really progressing. Steve O'Connor has turned the club around and I think Widnes are really good contenders for a Super League franchise."

Vikings supporters are sure to give a warm reception to a host of players who made the move from Widnes to Leigh in the closed season.

Dennis Moran, Toa Kohe-Love, Gareth Price and Lee Doran are expected to feature for the Centurions
