Just been on Wikipedia, at it is amazing what you can get through and find.

After reading a story on the BBC website about QPR having a new manager I thought I'd have a look at Bernie Eccleston and see how he made his money, anyway, in his biog there are links to other people, one being Max Mosley - famous for his recent porn outings, son of Sir Oswald Mosley, fascist.

Isn't a fascist like a Nazi? And more to the point how can a fascist get a Knighthood? Very stupid if you ask me.

And from Queens Park Rangers FC I've just gone to asking that question!

As far as I can remember, and I'm sure someone will correct me, but this excuse for a human being was very in with the top notch society, and he married Lady Diana Mitford, so I suppose he got it by association. Despite the fact that he was locked up for part of the war.
He was still causing trouble after the war in the East End of London with his 'brown shirts' when they targeted the Jews living there, but they got a shock because the Jews defended themselves!

If you get a chance, read Mosley's biography by his more literate son, Nicholas, who gives as unbiased a portrait as a son can. Mosley was a patrician High Tory by birth, a baronet. I can't quite remember when he got his gong, but it certainly wasn't for his efforts as a fascist - don't forget he was a Labour minister (a Labour Minister!!) until he quit Ramsey MacDonald's government in 1930 and formed a new party (called 'The New Party' believe it or not). Then he moved onto the BUF and the rest is history.

A moderately talented, utterly flawed egomaniac renegade of the sort that crops up in politics from time to time - think of Enoch Powell, David Owen - even Churchill changed parties twice.

I actually knew someone who was approached and offer 30/- a week to joint the Brownshirts.  He refused despite being out of work.
I think he was the last person to be locked up in the Tower.

Then you knew a good person Peter - a person of principle and integrity (which is sadly increasingly hard to find these days).

On a separate, though related, issue was it Unity Mitford who was the confidante of the Fuhrer, who actually shot herself in the head and survived for a few days ? She must have missed her brains by and 5 1/2 feet.

I did. He taught me a lot and I worked with him when I worked in Sheffield. He always wore a bow tie, and I only found out recently why. He was unable to tie the ordinary verson.

He wasn't awarded a knighthood or a gong or whatever you want to call it. He was born a baronet, which entitles him to be called 'sir'. A baronetcy is in between a peerage (ie Lord somebody) and a knighthood in terms of rank in this daft stuff.

Oswald Mosley carried on with the fascist stuff after the war and Max Mosley of F1 fame was heavily involved in it - he was a parliamentary candidate for his dad's party in the early sixties. It only really died out when the national front was formed.

Another wonderful day for society.

From the little I have read of Mosley was actually delusional (or just plain stupid) rather than malevolent or malicious. Sadly, the opinions he put forward only served to incite the genuine head bangers and nut cases. Again slightly off topic (though related) - it's the classic pitfall for the [part time socialists] though - I know they talk complete garbage and that it is ludicrously dangerous and incites one-eyed violence but, hey, they have a right to their opinion and who am I to interfere ....

You didn't read that in the Daily Telegraph by any chance?  He was plenty malevolent - no other way to see organising fascist marches in Jewish areas after WWII when neither he nor anyone else could claim any more not to know the whole deal about Auschwitz.

There were three sisters weren't there? I can't remember the name of the third, I also can't remember if Unity was the one with the crush on hitler, but it sounds about right.

Daily Mail surely - Lord Rothermere was friends with Moseley and had his paper support the british fascists in the 1930s and they continued to publish pro-hitler and mussolini articles, write up to the invasion of Czechoslovakia.
