Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but it is to do with Widnes.............sort of.

From an article in the Western Mail

CELTIC Crusaders look set to give Welsh sport another massive lift by being elevated to Super League status next month.

The Western Mail understands the ambitious Welsh outfit WILL be selected by the Rugby League as one of the two new franchises for the expanded 14-team competition from 2009.

Never ceases to amaze me how everyone knows who's getting the franchises well before the announcement date. You've got to ask yourself, are the RFL bods going around shouting the news to all and sundry? Are they really that amateurish? (stands back and waits for the obvious answers  Cheesy) .

When they initially announced the process a while back, didnt they say that the decision would be made in June, before being announced in July?

I may be wrong, but I'm sure i remember something along those lines.

It's kinda being discussed here....

http://ga.oh-servers.com/forum/index.php/topic,18672.0.html

Mathew Johns announced on the Footy Show down under a week or so ago that CC and Widnes would be in SL next season and that the NRL is expecting an exodus of players to both teams....

The delay is no doubt due to the RFL looking for reasons to put CC above other better applicants, like you say Glynn they must know by now .

I just cannot see how Celtic Crusaders can be even considered for Super League on the criteria set out by the RFL.The applications are supposed to be reviewed and decided by an independant panel. Therefore any talk of expansion other than in numbers will not come into it. Celtic are being financially backed by one individual, they have not got a decent ground, they have very poor gates, If they meet the criteria needed something is very wrong in our game. Why should they be jumped above any of the other applicants because they have put all their efforts into buying a team and having further advantages not allowed to the rest. Lets try and keep things in perspective Celtic are not in the first six for promotion.

Sorry to burst your balloon KCP but the independant panel only makes recomendations , the RFL have the final say, hence all the suspicion and CC, the RFL are dead set on expansion .

Totally agree with what you say
And they are going to use Catalans as there example of how expansion works with a lil help from the RFL
So there is another thing to CC advantage

I have not seen that documented anywhere. If that is true, then what is the point of clubs making applications when you say that the RFL are just going to pick who they want anyway?

I thought it had been stated all along that the RFL Board would decide.  Not sure where this independent panel comes in, or who is on it.  Can anyone enlighten me please ?

I suppose it is only right that CC's local paper would talk up and support their bid.

Wish we had one that would do so for us...

There was a similar report on 27th June in the Western Mail.

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sports/rugby-league-news/2008/06/27/rugby-league-crusaders-show-why-they-re-a-super-side-91466-21161345/

But the report looked a bit suspicious to me because it says "Applicants had to meet strict criteria......." and then it says "Super League status is all but guaranteed for the Celtic Crusaders....."  Surely a contradiction in terms.

I agree with that whole heartedly.
Local Papers you would think should be supportive of local teams.
