Halton Simms Cross will be celebrating it's 40th anniversary as a club next year and the club is organising several events in order to commemorate this historic feat. The culmination of which will be a 40th Anniversary Dinner to be held at the Stobart Stadium on the 4th July 2009. In planning the evening we are hoping to attract past players, coaches, committee members, sponsors, supporters and indeed anyone who would like to come and join in the festivities! As part of the planning for the evening the organisers are appealing to anybody past or present that has had anything to do with the club to provide any pictures, newspaper clippings, or other kinds of club memorabilia in order to put together a commemorative brochure for the evening as a keepsake for those that attend. Any other regalia would be most welcome as I'm sure we could put together a display on the night from years gone by which would be of interest to everyone.

This event does appear to be some way off but as you can appreciate an event like this does take a lot of planning and so we would be very grateful for any speedy responses.

Further details will be posted on 'Simmies' website throughout the coming months about organised events and updates regarding tickets etc. so here's a link...

If you do have any of the items that you wish to submit please e-mail Chris Middlehurst @ chris.mid @ ntlworld.com using header: simmies/40 and he will get in touch.

Thanks in advance for all your help, from everyone at Simms Cross and we look forward to a memorable and highly succesful celebratory year!

To further add to the last post, we are trying to compile lists of fathers, sons, brothers etc... you get the point?! Who have all played either over the generations or together over the years. This is quite a comprehensive list as just last Saturday Simmies 2nds were represented by two sets of four lads from particular families and a set of twins! And while they were playing there was three sets of brothers in the 1st team!  Shocked

Entries can be posted on here or e-mailed to the address on the first post. Cheers

As an idea on how to attract more people why don't you have a "All Time Best Simms Cross XIII", this will generate a good buzz around the town and certainly around the club, people interested in seeing if they make the cut or more importantly saying "why they should of made the cut and so & so shouldn't be in it cos I'm far better than him", then on  the night the candidates and the team can be announced with each team member given some sort of award, maybe a Simmies shirt or trophy etc........ with a picture taken to remember the evening?

The only sticking point is how and who decides who gets in?

Maybe the committee gets together to decide or invites a select few from each era to argue the case, taking into account appearances for the club, points scored, tries scored, international honours, trophies won, era's played in, etc....................?

Any thoughts Minnichello or anybody?

Thanks Buffalo am glad you brought that up. We have discussed this as when playing at Leigh Miners a couple of years ago they put an 'all-time best Simms Cross XIII' in the programme which was the subject of some debates as you can imagine! haha  Cheesy What has been broached is that when attending the evening everyone present will get a commemorative brochure as a memento for the event and in it will be a form to be completed by each individual giving them the chance to name their best XIII. Hopefully we will have people from all generations attending and so this will give a fair reflection on who deserves to be in? It's about as fair as we could make it rather although there's always going to be some bias, we will see! All the votes will be counted on the night and then results will be read out ( can hear the rattles being thrown now! haha ) and possibly a presentation will take place.

Cheers for your input and keep them coming!

PS. Ignore that clown I'm sure the Albert are embaraased by him!  Grin

Minichello, i've been giving it some thought since my last post as i was intrigued as to how it could work, i've thought about the idea of giving everyone a team sheet to fill in as they like but this could fail in a number of ways:

1- To remember all the Simmies players over the era's in one night may prove difficult, some quality unsung player maybe forgotten about
2- People could just pick the worst player possible to be funny who doesn't justify the accolade, especially if he has a large quantity of friends or family in that night
3- These people who make the XIII may not be there so the presentation may be a little bit of let down if u have a number of no-shows through no fault of their own

If you do decide to run it that way then why dont you have a team sheet with the 3 or 4 best players in each position then each individual who attends only has to pick between the 3 or 4 for every position that it has been narrowed down too by a committee, then the candidates in with a shot of being honoured would know to attend regardless of selection or not, only a suggestion mind?

Although my initial thoughts would be for you to form a committee consisting off people who have watched, played or coached simmies over the decades and battle it out between yourselves arguing each players cases taking into the account all the things mentioned in my previous post, just a couple of people from each era should suffice and you could even include some neutrals from the Widnes ARL or NWCARL that have watched Simmies over the years.

Best of luck anyway, has the makings of a great night.
