Who were the best club players. Mainly one-club men, locals, committed to wearing the Black and White.

Here are a few of mine:
Eric Hughes,
Mal Aspey,
Jimmy Hoey
Tommy McCue
David Hulme
Darren Wright
Harry Millington
Keith Elwell
Harry Dawson
Nat Silcock.     Many of them scored over 100 tries for Widnes, with Mal Aspey scoring 234.

Hughes played a few game sfor saints under Alex the great at Saints late in his career.
Aspey played for Wigan  and possibly Fulham?
David Hulme played for another club in SL too can't recall which one
Elwell went to Barrow on loan for a spell
Mc Cue played for a yorkshire team in the war years  when we disbanded Halifax I think.
But I know what you mean but technically they were not one club men. and under same criteria Ray Dutton who finished at Whitehaven as player coach.

Koloto only played for us in RL but did not put the years in

Best of that lot must be

Millington Dutton, Elwell and Aspey for length of service.

New ones George Kemel, Ged Lowe , Koloto, Edgar Bate, Mike O'neill but again went to Leeds late on and Frank Myler who went to Saints after 11 years with us.

Plus Billy Thompson, who had the chippy in Milton Road and scored 110 tries for Widnes.

The best clubman was the late Alan Dearden, always gave 110%

Played well above his weight and was the best tackler i have ever seen

For one club cant believe what people forget and have to admire the start of the post , but you cant knock a man who played for his home town from 1922/23 to 1938/39 and only stopped when illness forced him of the field . Did he play for anyone else well that depends if you count Great Britain , England and Lancashire as another club theres alot of very good reasons why Nat Silcock is a legend just a shame so few remember .

No matter where in the world they played they were still  West Bank Men .

Sorry, I forgot. I was looking at scorers and forgetting the powerhouses of the game. I did see Nat Silcock playing as a little boy. A towering presence on the field.

If I had to restrict the choice to three it would have to be:-

Keith Elwell

Tony Myler

Frank Myler

Pretty good. Being older than you, I would choose Tommy McCue, Harry Millington and Nat Silcock.

If I was forced to pick 3 they would be

Elwell (reluctantly had a couple of games at Barrow on loan)
Adams
Dutton (who if I remember correctly had a year or two at Whitehaven at the very end of his career)

All 3 played a huge number of games, got to International level and as much as can reasonably be said played all there careers at Widnes.

Ray Dutton went to Whitehaven as Player Coach for the last couple of years of his playing career.

Harry Millington played only for Widnes. During the war he spent all his time on his farm in Gorsey Lane.
