In today's League Weekly there is a report that Saints lost £400,000 in 2007 despite winning the Challenge Cup and reaching the SL Grand Final.
I wonder whether Ray French will mention this on the Rugby League Hour on Thursday on Radio Merseyside.  Probably not.

This was made public by Saints a long time ago and was blindly ignored by the Widnes fans who 'couldn't understand how a club as wonderful as Widnes could have failed to make profits at any time in the last ten years'.

I still believe Leeds to be the only RL club making profits and that is because they are part of a bigger Leeds/Headingly Carnegie sports group.

Stuck

I think the Rhinos financial stability was assured a couple of years ago when they sold that " other ground " at Headingley to Yorkshire County Cricket Club for around 12 million pounds.

Ouch!

But if Saints have had such a good season and still lost such an amount surely they cannot be considered financially stable as they must rely on such losses being funded from somewhere?
What if they had a 'bad' season, the losses would be astronomical surely?

I think that once their new stadium gets up and running it will be a totally different situation! You put them in decent stadium they would turn over a profit every year, same with most clubs

Losses don't really matter provided you have directors who are prepared to keep upping the loans. I would venture to suggest that the vast majority of clubs of any sport in this country would be loss-making. We'll see how we're doing when we file some accounts I guess.

And therein lies the problem. Sport needs sugar daddies. And many have just lost a fortune in the stock market crash. Sport needs to be able to fund itself and in RLs case, that means a return to part-time rugby. Have we learnt nothing from the credit crisis?

They can't even rely on money from the sale of the Knowsley Road ground as it is mortgaged to a couple of the directors.   If Tesco run into difficulties i can see the new ground being put on hold as well.

I thought it was LCF&A that sold the ground, ie the holding company, not the Rhinos

I don't think we can afford to go part time now.
We would end up in the mess which French RL found itself in where all the best players went off to play professional RU.
Once you get into that downward spriral it would be difficult to pull out of it.

If after the last few seasons they have had and are still losing money mustn't that mean that the salary cap is being ignored or at least miscalculations being made some where.

Yes, but RU will be in the same mess anyway.
