Just thought this was worthwhile posting as good service is a rarity!

My Wii is now about 18 months old and the disk started to make a grinding noise a few weeks ago. Today, being half-term mini-me has put it on only to be met with a succession of error messages when trying to load games.

Fearing the worst I called Nintendo and spoke to a chap there who asked what the problem was and the age of the machine before saying he would send out a courier label and for me to send the console and power supply in to them for assessment. Fearing the worst, I asked what that could mean in terms of cost.

He explained that it would either be £28 for the repair, OR they may even take a view on it and do it under warranty for hardware failure AND from either outcome they would warranty it for a further 12 months!

Will let you know if all does not go well, but that is a great service and reassuring after you have paid out £££'s for console, games etc etc.

I heard that the most common fault with wii was the fact that most people store them on their sides, as indicated in the instruction manual.  The only problem is when used for long periods of time this causes wear on the inards leading to damage. Not sure if it does or not just something i heard!

That sounds quite plausible to me.

I work for a company which designs silicon chips and kids are always very impressed to find out that I worked on one of the chips used in the Wii.

I keep mine with the drive horizontal, so it wasn't that. To be honest, I think the disk drive bearing wore out - it was making a whirring/grinding noise up until the time it stopped reading the disks. Drive motor or lens motor I suppose?

Unfortunately, it was returned without even a covering letter let alone a repair description so I don't know  - great service though.

I wonder if they have thought of making cars??? Wink
