"A new record for engage Super League attendances has been set over the Easter period with an aggregate attendance of 84,474 attending the seven fixtures on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

The figure which averages out at 12,067 per game smashes the previous record of 78,917 set in Round 25 of the 2007 season.

Over the last two days, four clubs have posted five figure attendances with two – Wigan Warriors and Hull FC - posting bumper crowds in excess of 20,000.

Nigel Wood, the RFL’s Chief Executive, said: “This is tremendous news that such a major record has been broken and it is a credit to all the clubs involved who have worked tirelessly to market these fixtures.

“Easter’s local derbies always generate huge crowds but to beat a record by more than 5,500 people proves that engage Super League continues to grow in popularity all the time.

“We’ve witnessed some superb nail-biting games so far this Easter with five of the games separated by just seven points or less.  This underlines just how competitive engage Super League is this season.

“engage Super League offers a unique family sporting entertainment experience and the players and coaches deserve huge praise for producing such exciting contests.”

Easter’s record crowds come just one week after the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup attracted its biggest crowds for 14 years.

Earlier this season, Round 1 of engage Super League attracted an aggregate attendance of 77,944, a record for an opening round of the competition."

The RFL are in effect admitting that local derbies bring in the crowds.

eg Bradford v Leeds 14,554
    Castleford v Wakefield 10,155
    Hull v Hull KR 22,337
    Wigan v St Helens 22,323

Harlequins v Catalan Dragons anyone?

The RFL clearly using statistics to their advantage.  What they fail to point out is that the aggregate attendance has gone up because, with a 14 team league, their were 7 fixtures, whereas when the previous best "aggregate" was set (2007) there would only have been 6 fixtures.

In actual fact the 12067 per game this easter was WORSE than the 2007 record which works out at 13152 per game !

Or, more to the point, there are Salford and Celtic.  Wink

Noticed that Wakey only had 6000 or so in what is almost a 'local' fixture.  That is about the same as when they played St H in the fixture after the Celtic disaster.

Proof of the RFL's willingness to use deception?

One extra game.
Two extra teams.
Considering who the extra teams are and given the downward spiral in Bradford's crowds the total round attaendance was good.
Everything the RFL utters is spun though we have to accept that.
