I've been watching Widnes since 1984 and in my opinion the best 3 players I've seen play for the club are Offiah, Tony Myler and Kurt Sorensen.  Can't imagine there have been many better players in the UK or down under in their respective positions over the last 100 years, and would personally put all 3 in an all-time top 10 RL players list.

Denis O'neill & Glynn Shaw to name but two.

So there's a Stand Off & Prop for starters. Anymore offers?
Winger wise if your talking all round talent probably John Bassnet.
He may not have been as prolific as Offiah but he was a good'un.

The one problem with your statement coulton is that , as you say yourself , you have only been watchin widnes since 84 . So it makes it kind of hard to say those players are the best in the last 100 years . But I think its likely every generation will have very much the same opinion about players theyve seen over those who came before .

No matter where in the world they played they were still  West Bank Men .

Why not start a new thread about players you enjoyed watching who weren't quite top drawer. See the title of the thread! Darren wright wasn't even the best centre in the team at the time

No they're not. The current gold price is £28767 per kilo. If you take an average SL centre, say George Carmont, 91 kilos, that works out at  £2,617,797. No-ones worth that

galaxying legendary! Post of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been watching Widnes since 1937/8. I have seen a lot of very good players, but to compare one decade against another decade is not easy.

I would have great difficulty choosing only one or two players. The "1989" was magnificent, I've never seen better (except maybe 182 Aussies).... the "1975-1980" Widnes team was full of talent too. I only go back to the 60's so can't really say too much about anything beyond that.

But to pick just two players:
Denis O'Neill in his young days was the best. He could do what JD did in his day - but was even quicker (I think). He seemed to me to be the same as an Offiah - give him the ball in the clear and you'd never catch him. He could have been one of the best ever players in the world, but for "Murphy's elbow" (I know people argue it wasn't him... but to us it was always him).

Ian Hare For reasons unknown to me, he didn't seem to play many games but was the first winger I remember playing for Widnes that had real pace to burn. From memory he knew where the line was and could do a spectacular dive in the corner to finish off a move. Played for GB once I think, maybe twice, but we never got players in the GB side in those days. It was all Leeds, Saints, Wigan with a smattering of players from other clubs.... actually pretty much like it is today! Smiley

So so hard choosing just two.

Widnes. It's more than just home, it's who I am.
