On Saturday May 16th May, many of the members of the World Champion Wheelchair Tag Rugby League team will be visiting the Merseyside region to showcase a version of the sport that is one of the fastest growing in Rugby League.
It is played with a Rugby ball to Rugby League rules with the only differences being that players use wheelchairs, pull tags off shoulders instead of tackling and take kicks by punching the ball from a raised kicking tee. Other than that the game is Rugby League.
It is one of the most inclusive sports around - players can be male or female, the youngest member of the World beating squad was 14 whilst the oldest was a 48 year old, and you don't need to be disabled to play the game.
The game was initially developed by two brothers who wanted to be able to share their passion of the sport however one brother was a wheelchair user. This form of the game allows players to compete on an equal basis.
Those who wish to come along will see that it is not a game for wimps, this is a full on version of the sport.
Trust in Widnes have secured funding to help establish a Merseyside club and are working with three local authorities - Liverpool, Knowsley and Halton to help turn the dream into reality. We can provide transport for any groups who would like to take up the opportunity to take part in the event which will be held at the Greenbank Academy, Sefton Park, Liverpool from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.
