Just been reading the history of players thread especially about Vin, Brian and Derek Smith. Tom Smith was not related to them as is stated in a few posts. He did indeed work at the Town Hall and married Peggy O'Neill from originally Moss Bank. However she isn't the aunty of Mike and Steve O'Neill. Her three nephews, only one of which is an O'Neill, never played the game professionally.

Derek, Vin and Brian Smith plus their sister Pauline lived at 9 Moss Bank Road.  They were related to Jimmy Hoey, another second row forward of great renown.

Related to Jimmy Hoey via his brother Billy (another 1930's Widnes player) who married their relation from the Boyle family (Boyle transport who Derek worked for I think)

Absolutely right. I saw Derek Smith driving a Boyle's lorry in the late 70's in a traffic jam on the M18.
