I recall that as well but remember it at the clock end, think he did that a few times.

In his book Doug mentions challenging Scully to hit a tree with a pass that that was a fair distance away and to Scully's amazement doug did the deed.

My earliest Widnes memories were of Joe Lydon in the cup in 1984 against Wigan. We used to see the games here in Australia and he was awesome to a little kid all of 12 back in the days. I was stoked when he came out in 1987 and played at the roosters for a few year as as well.  Then Martin Offiah did the same. i wish they showed more then just the Challenge Cup out here though in those days.

You might be thinking of a try in the 1980 Premiership Final against Bradford N at Station Rd, Swinton.  Keith Bentley ended up scoring the try but it was created by Aspey's break from his own line followed by a pin-point kick through from about the half-way line.  When interviewed after the game, Mal said something along the lines of "Well I had to kick it really since I couldn't have run much further myself".  He may or may not have had his tongue in his cheek  Grin
I think that has to be one of the best dummies I have ever seen.  Look at the reaction of the two Bradford defenders who both went for Bentley and then the way Mal kicked the ball with perfect weight and distance as he was being tackled.  A great try.  Look at it from 28 seconds in Widnes Montage 1 on YouTube.
