I don't think summer rugby would work in the amateur game, with everyone taking their holidays. Plus there tends to be a higher injury rate because of all the hard grounds, which won't be watered and tended to like pro pitches.

But I think it might be a good idea to have an official 4 week break around Christmas time, then extend the season until the end of May, instead of what they do now, were teams will be playing 3 games in 8 days in April.

AT - good point
Boots - All teams lose players through the winter too, not sure about the injury rate, I have been involved with Runcorn for the last 5 years and have to say there are similar numbers of injuries in the winter season.

Its no secret that the RFL favour summer rugby and are in the process of moving the NCL to the summer as was demonstrated last summer with their "trial" as the Maries experienced in the 6 games they played.

I for one, prefer winter rugby although the harder summer pitches suit my pacy style of game Wink

As enjoyable as Summer rugby is I don't see how it could work long term. As Boots has already said, the summer is when people take their holidays, kids are off school etc. In the winter their isn't anything else to do, but when the weather is better in the summer people take their families for days out etc. Also, a number of pitches become cricket pitches in the summer or are closed to allow them time to recover from the winter months. There are already a lack of pitches across the North West so if rugby pitches are unused in the winter they will become football or RU pitches. Leigh Rec has already lost a pitch to football.
I agree that a possible break in the season would be beneficial as it would hopefully avoid the brunt of the really bad weather, but would also allow the pitches, and the players  Tongue, some time to recover.

This is most teams chnce at silverware though JL. i reckon trim the leagues to 10, break over Christmas until the end of Jan would be an option.
