By Wire' ex-Saint Billy Benyon
It was one of the worst stiff arms I have ever seen and despite Benyon having 'previous' he was given 'sending off sufficient'. Gill was never the same player after that tackle.

I believe Myler was one of the best stand offs and I know that Gary Schofield rated him highly but it is the injuries which got in his way. I also remember he was also a bit of a rebel and on more than one occasion he threatened to leave the club. Ken Gill was the final piece in the jigsaw and without him we wouldnt have won our 1st title in 1978.

Absolutely no doubt at all that Kenny Gill was a very gifted player. He read the game very well, had great pace off the mark and frightened opposing half backs. He was a totally different build to Tony and played a very different game.
Didn't we sign him from Salford?

Yes we did. A bit of a surprise that he left Salford but it was a pleasure to see him wear the black and white. They dont make stand offs like Gill, Myler and O'Neill anymore

I always remember as a kid while travelling over to the ground, praying that Tony Myler would be playing. I'd arrive at the ground with my Dad, pick up a programme and, YES, there he was named in the team - which was probably printed 3 or 4 days earlier. I lost count however, how many times he didn't actually make it onto the pitch!
I would have to say that he was, and remains, my favourite player of all time - just such a shame injuries cost him so much playing time

The same could be said about Dennis O'Neill. Didn't Alex Murphy crongle Dennis at Leigh with one hell of a stiff arm.

There has been much talk about great stand offs. The young Frank Myler in the fifties/sixties will take some beating. Alan Hardisty and David Topliss were also pretty good.

I'd love to see some footage of Ken Gill in that 78 season. I remember the game Benyon took him out and I also remember the night we were presented with the Championship Trophy with the team taking it round the pitch to the un surprising tune of We Are The Champions by Queen. Happy memories, by the way Glynn Shaw was awesome that season as well.

We didn't even have him for the full season as he was stiff armed under the chin at one of the home games and lost a bit of gametime after that.
Ken Gill signed in the January/February and then left at the end of the season. He was playing again 8 days after the high tackle. He left in the summer because he got tapped up by Murphy who had just taken over at Salford and given a big transfer budget. Widnes wouldn't do business with Salford and Gill refused to stay so he went up to Barrow for a season or so as a compromise and was a sensation up there. When he eventually returned to Salford they had a great 6 months but we went there and beat them in the cup (Keith Bentley scored a cracker) and it all petered out for them after that.

Tony was the best player I've seen in my 40 years watching us , and would be regarded as an all time great but for injuries. Is it just me or was there something very Myleresque abourt Sam Tomkins on Saturday night . The way that he ran with the ball reminded me of Tony .

I remember that Bentley try, only minutes to go and we were heading out of the Challenge Cup when he scored an absolute belter. The walk back to the coach was a bit scary after that!!

I know he wasn't out for long, but he was never the same player after that tackle.

I didn't see much of him at Barrow or Salford but he got rave reviews at both clubs (and he was on the wrong side of 30 by this time so he was never likely to go on forever).

Absolute rubbish - if you lot watched other teams like wot I have you would know he's not the best. I dare you to prove it and I want facts! If TM wasn't, who, in your opinion, was that best?
