Absolute rubbish - if you lot watched other teams like wot I have you would know he's not the best. I dare you to prove it and I want facts!   If TM wasn't, who, in your opinion, was that best?

Great player but IMO because he was so injury prone he was not as good as everyone goes onabout on here. Charles Douglas Laughton was the one for me both as player and coach. Then Sorensen and Offiah all in front of Tony.

Having watched Widnes for 50+ years - Tony Myler is the best player I have ever seen in a Widnes shirt.

Having watched Widnes for 40 years+ he was one the best but not the best.
You have to take into account what position players played in too. Tony played in a pivotal position & he also played in a very good side. A side were every player was well drilled & new what his job was. You only have to look at Englands performance in The World Cup to see how great players can look when they have around them. The likes of Rooney, Lmapard,Barry, Gerrard & Co look World Class when they have all the classy foreign players around them. But when they were left to stand on their own to feet the couldn't hack it.
I know top players don't always make good coaches, but if Tony didn't have the guidance of Doug Laughton & the class of player around him would he have been that good of a player, because he showed his frailties when he went coaching & he's never been associated with the game since.
In all IMHO yes a great player in a great team. Not the greatest player Widnes have had. Tommy McCue would probably come into that catagory. For me Denis O'neill was the best Stand Off ever to put on Widnes shirt. And Martin Offiah was probably the greatest finisher I've ever seen. The most complete player for me was probably Joe Lydon he had it all speed, class & a good brain.

Obviously Davies was a fantastic player and probably the best in RU at the time. I remember when he first came to Widnes and in one of his interviews he mentioned how he stood in awe at some of the things Myler was pulling off in training and couldn't believe the skill both mentally and with ball in hand. For someone like Davies to say that was testament to how good TM was - in my opinion if he had remained more injury free he would now be classed as the Worlds greatest ever player, followed closely by the great man himself - WL |
