This is possibly off topic strictly speaking - just thought I'd mention there's a smashing display of Old Wids memorabilia at Widnes library, this being the 50th anniversary of the club at the Heath. The original club dates form 1924 I think and was formed by the old boys of Widnes Secondary School, hence 'Old Wids'.

That would be the times they wouldn't let good honest RL lads through the door for a pint. Think I'll give it a miss thanks and your right it is an Off topic subject.

I went there with three Old Wids players who, for a laugh, told them that they had seen me playing RL a few days ago!  I had been, and the reason they saw me was that they were playing RL as well! They got in, I was refused!  It was packed for some reason!

I played for them during (from memory) '59 and '60 seasons until I moved to live in Manchester then moved clubs.

Good Grief - it was half a century ago - I must go and lie down and take my afternoon nap.

In the mid-late 70's I used to go there a lot Friday / Saturday disco. A member in fact. Widnes had won a cup or got to Wembley or something and I went in with my B&W scarf on... I was asked to leave. The chairman (can't remember his name now) stopped it happeneing because he'd seen me at Warterlloo that year when Widnes beat West Park to win the RU Lanc's cup. He said we're all WIDNES here. I do know people who were banned though, for involvement in RL. The wids always had a coach to Wembley too.

It annoys me a little to think that our lower league teams have to play at the Wids too. I have no problems with them per se. I wish them well and support anything "Widnes".

I loved the Wids. And been to quite  a few RU games there too. And when I lived in Northampton I went to watch the "Wids Kids" play there too.

The name Kevin Higgins rings a bell, but not Mick Ryan.

He had probably gone to Sale.  Come to think of it, he went to Sale from Orrell.

Kevin was a teacher -- and a good one--- at Fisher More.

Both Kevin Higgins & Mick Ryan were teachers at Fisher-More High School.
Kevin taught English & Mick was the games teacher.
I think Kevin was teaching there from when the school first opened as he taught my Dad, he was still there when I left in 1979.

He was. I was in his Department when I was there in 1960.

Sorry if I've trodden on sensitive toes (RS, Peter  Wink) but there's also an excellent book on the subject called 'If you go down to the Wids today', in the local history section at Widnes library.

Kev Higins was still there when I went to F&M in 1982 - can't remember if he was still here when I left though. He was a good teacher as well.

Mick Ryan was still there when I left. He was my form teacher in the 4th & 5th year. We were dreading it due to his hard case reputation but he was spot on. Very old school and deffo one of the lads.

I played for the Wids colts in the late 80's before I went to league and have some great memories of the place.

Don't forget Tony Myler & Sharkey Myers came from the Wids too.
