there just where they was about two years ago, all the council has said is they will form a joint company to develop the site, the last one went into administration the day after salford where granted a SL licence.

they still have to submit detailed planning permission. possibly face a public enquiry, then build the thing.

A risk assessment of their business plan sounds interesting!
How can a council consider ploughing money into a stadium for one of the teams who are at risk of losing the licence? Different kettle of fish if it were , say, Saints who have to be at low risk of losing the spot.

Problem is, if Salford lose the spot the fans won't trek to Barton and there will be no 'nosey local fans'.

Bad bit is that the council will undoubtedly approach the RFL to investigate this 'risk' and who knows what undertakings may be given?

Just read on BBC text that the new sports complex at Barton Mcr has been approved by Salford council, they are launching a joint venture with Peel Holdings (sure they used to sponsor us circa 4 to 5 years back?).

It will cost 26 million and be completed by 2011, at the outside 21 months, I would say to complete a project that big in that timescale is impossible.

We have all been having a go about everything to do with Salford but I myself thought that the ground would be the one thing they would not deliver.

RFL let them in on everything else last time and none of that will change, but if they build the ground they have a real shout of staying in SL, we all know the Welsh are there to stay and probably Cas and Quins, that leaves Wakey as far as I can see.

So Wakey out Widnes or another in or does anyone in the know think the latest release from Salford is cow-spangles?

That job is only a tiddly one at £26m mate! You would be surprised what we can achieve in construction, most of the work will be in the infrastructure surrounding it. They could probably get the stadium up in less than 12 months as it is all pre-cast concrete.

They won't have any problems there, there will always be contractors bidding for work. I know of construction firms,  in competing for work have written off between 5 - 10% just for turnover to keep staff in the North West.

It all hangs on getting the faithful to travel to Barton.  It is true that a new stadium can generate a nosy few to start with, but if the success on the field doesn't materialise the dream fades.  It's no more fun watching your team get beat in a new stadium than it is in a run down shed.

Maybe they'll lay  free buses on from the city?

They have the perfect solutiion for the licence application if they pull it off.
Build the Stadium for 2012 but don't play in it before the licence is decided therefore negating their poor crowds at the Willows but guaranteeing superb crowds at the New Stadium without actually having to prove it.
Remember during the last licence applictaion a Salford Spokesman was allowed to absolutely guarantee crowds of 12000 in an Angela Powers Interview witout being challenged what so ever on the claim.
I don't believe a lot of their existing fans will travel out to Barton either and I can't see where the new fans will come from.

They announced they had started work on the Stadium last night on Boot's an All but it's only remedial work I'll start to believe when we can see a stand going up.

We should stop going on about Salford they got away with an outrageous con last time but we can't do anything about it and it just sounds bitter.
If the RFL are going to give them a licence they will give them a licence but so far they have added absolutely nothing to Super League. Of the existing 14 they should be marked bottom in virtaully every category.

I'd wager money on it being built this time...

Peel desperately want the land Salford City Council currently own to build Port Salford.. This news announcement is nothing more than confirmation that SCC and Peels have shaken hands on forming a new JV company to build the stadium.

Unlike Red City Developments Peels have quite a bit more money behind them will undoubtedly see this as a potential money earner if they can get Sale Sharks over too and will be quite keen to get this moving on these new terms. It's win, win, win for them.

Salford still only have outline planning permission and don't actually have any detailed plans drawn up yet to submit. Work was due to start next week but this has been put back to April. After that 3 - 4 months of preparation work, 3 months to let the ground re-settle and then on with the build.
I wouldn't expect it to look like the drawings that are still being touted on the TV etc but I wouldn't bet against it this time.

I think he is referring to the Salford chairman who is John Wilkinson who has a passing resemblance to Fred Elliot.

According to Dave Tarry the Salford CEO  on Radio Manchester's Rugby League Extra this evening their proposed stadium will be 12,000 capacity.  They will of course be able to increase the capacity to 15,000 and then to 20,000 (if required ). As far as I recall Salford's SL bid was based on their providing an "iconic" 20,000 capacity stadium.

Pie & Sky comes to mind.
I don't think it will get built/ Especially if Sale get relegated from the Union Premiership, which is quite possible.
If they go down their gates will drop lower than Salfords.
Sale average about 7,000 give or take but about 40% of their gate is away support.
