Wildcats skipper Jason Demetriou receives testimonial

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats skipper Jason Demetriou has been granted a testimonial by the Rugby Football League for services to the sport.
The Australian centre's testimonial is expected to last three months from May.

Wildcats communications and media manager John Huxley said: "Jason has been a model professional for British rugby league."

Demetriou, 34, has captained Wildcats for the past four years and in 2007 was nominated for the Man of Steel.

During his British career, he has also played for Lancashire Lynx, Rochdale Hornets and Widnes Vikings, clocking up more than 270 appearances in all.

Additionally, Demetriou works with the Wildcats Community Department in schools and external programmes.

He also took a lead role in the club's response to the untimely deaths of club-mates Adam Watene and Leon Walker.

Certainly a well deserved honour

I bet he wishes he was still at Widnes he'd get a lot more money out of it if he was.

Why would he wish he was still here?we have been in the second division for almost five years whilst Jason has never been out of super league with Wakefield.

RICKP:

If it wasn't for Neil Kelly he might still be at Widnes, don't forget it was him who didn't think JD & Phil Cantillon were worth another contract at the club, and to be brutally honest, we probably lost our SL status because of it.

Dead right widneslatic.
IMO those 2 players you've mentioned geing let go are probably the biggest contributing factor to our demise from the SL.
I too think we would have survived if they were still at the club.
As for DJones I don't mean wageswise I mean on the collection front.

RICKP:

you're probably right mate, I know an awful lot of Widnes supporters still have a soft spot for both JD & Phil Cantillon,
they were both quality players that we missed tremendously, and didn't deserve to leave the club in the way they did.

JD deserves this testamonial, he's a loyal clubman & still a quality player at the age of 34.

WELL DONE JD!

Cantillon wasn't quite SL standard. His replacement,Milllard, was good enough to play for Wigan and Leeds in the twilight of his career.Cantillon was released by both those clubs in his younger days.

Both JDs and Cantillon's replacements were far and away better players. Fact. Moule and Millard. When you think of the Emelio's and Manu's of this world, you know you can then say JD was a loss. Our demise from SL was brought on by lack of investment and ambition by a board of directors, not because Demetriou and Cants left!! Roll Eyes
