There's a nice architect's picture of the proposed stadium - are they taking a leaf out of Salford's book?

No start or completion dates mentioned.

When is salford's set to be ready? 2009 was built up as there farewell year to the Willows, which ofcourse never materialised. Now they saying next season will be the penultimate yeas, so by my reckoning they don't plan to e in their new ground until 2013....

There seems to have been a lot of work done on the Salford site, so maybe they're finally cracking on.

They reckon 2011 is going to be their last season at The Willows - maybe they'll play at Old Trafford in 2012 to cater for all their extra fans until the stadium is ready.

Does it look like a stadium though, or is it just the shopping park they are building there?

Isn't the funding based on the rental of the units? I'd have thought they might have struggled on that point given the downturn?

The funding for the stadium is based on £4M from the NWDA and the rest from the Council via a loan.  As far as I recall in the past Salford City Reds were going to own the stadium and the retail units and they were going to let the retail units. The rents  from the retail units were to give Salford City Reds an "income stream" to enable them to buy players to compete at the top of SL.  It now looks as though the Council and Peel Holdings will own the stadium and any other development including retail units.
For the stadium to go ahead the Council wanted a "business case" and on Salford City Reds official website the latest update is 18th May.  In it it says that "In the business case for the new stadium, the loan will be repaid by selling the developed land to retail tenants and with income from people and clubs using the facility, including ticket sales, car parking, advertising, and conference and banqueting venue hire."  From this it looks as though Salford City Reds will get no money from the use of the stadium  by others or the rent any retail units.  According to this week's League Express planning permission is still required for the whole development so I can't see how they are "cracking on" with building the stadium at the present time.

And no details of any funding.

The NWRDA has withdrawn funding from all projects unless there is a legally binding contract. Will this affect Salford and as all RDA's are being abolished where will Cas/ Wakey get external funding

I think Wakey see this as the last chance saloon... the groundshare idea would have seen the stadium built at the better of the two proposed sites, and without question that's the Cas site; not a popular choice with the Wakey faithful.

I think Wakey honestly fear that if they had to 'move in with Cas' then their club might not survive

What impresses me most regarding Castleford's computer generated video display is the railway line and station they are making us think is part of the development. A rail spur and station would probably cost as much as the stadium to build. This in my mind makes Salford's artists impression look amateur and will SURELY BE EMBRACED by the RFL. Not Only fantasy, but easy to get to.

It would not surprise me in the least, if come Licence Application time Salford, Castleford and Wakefield will be no further forward than they were 3 yeard ago.

Chuck the three of them out of Super League and make way for Widnes, Halifax and Leigh.

The RFL should be sweating over this, with us ticking a box anyway. However, I think if we finish outside  the top six it may give the RFL that bit of ammo to say no to us.

I cant see how they can kick one out and leave the other in, unless they get a lifeline.....

I dont trust the powers that be and I fully expect us to get railroaded again.

Not owning the stadium you play in or benefitting from any income streams that are generated, is quite common. We don't benefit cash wise from playing in our stadium other than income from attendances and some of the corporate boxes. Catering, etc, is all run by the council who benefit from the profits. I understand it is the same at Leigh. The big plus of being a simple tennant, rather than the owner, is that there are no outgoings related to maintenance, etc. This is crippling some clubs, even those in SL, when it comes to getting safety certificates, etc.

There may be trouble ahead.........

Apologies, this is not a dig at Wakey who have a terrific history, but you have to say that their planning (or lack of it) over the last 10+ years has been nothing short of a disaster. This little action group will, you can be sure, be very vociferous in letting the RFL know their feelings over the next few months.

Wakefield are a complete joke off the pitch.

When they first went into Super League they played some games at Barnsley, I think to get the ground up to scratch and yet here we are 10 years later and they are still no further down the line.

What do they offer to the game at the top level?
