Where would people recommend for am mot on a car
Use the Council's MOT testing centre.
http://www2.halton.gov.uk/content/transportandstreets/roadsandfootways/mottesting/?a=5441
The council have an MOT centre to MOT the council vehicles. By law they have to open to the public too.
It's much more efficient to go to the council test centre as they are not interested in trying to shaft you for extra repairs or additional work. They will simply pass or fail you.

Spot on VJ someone talking sense at last. Have used it for many years myself after getting shafted by someone trying to do uneeded work on my car. How do i know this ? simple, when the garage failed my car on something i knew was ok, i then took my car to another testing station and it passed with flying colours. I then pointed out the fault that the first garage had failed me on and was told that the other place should not have failed on it.
So perhaps the original poster should have asked "Where should i not take my car for and MOT"
