I Know we lost, but just found it on youtube and that macker try still brings the hairs on me neck up. probably cause it was all we had to shout about all day, and I found myself jumping about like a loon on the terraces

a great try.... one of the very few mistakes by douglas of laughtonshire was playing platt in that game ahead of dave lyon, imo. we went on to give lyon away for nothing and subsequently wire sold him on to saints for a fortune. i was only a youngster but recall platts kicking and drop outs in that game were pretty dreadful, a strong point in lyons game for sure.... still dougie made up for it the next few years....

I have mentioned that mysterious 'Use a condom' banner before, but now you can see it (1 min 7 secs). I was stood against the white wall over to the left of the screen. Some drunken idiot fell off it right on top of me near the end of the match. Another great day out at HQ, eh?  Cry

Was this our one and only loss in a Challenge Cup semi?

We wish!

Hull in 1980 and 3 against Saints spring to mind. And there would have been a few going back (Wigan 1946, Bradford in the late 1890s???).

Was this our one and only loss in a Challenge Cup semi?

23 played (including the replay against Castleford in 1964, 9 defeats in all.

This query will return 22 of them http://www.rugby.widnes.tv/searchg.php?q=Chall+Cup+(SF)&scfield=comp&Submit=Search

You can get the 1964 replay from http://www.rugby.widnes.tv/searchg.php?q=Chall+Cup+(SFR)&scfield=comp&Submit=Search

Someone our there might know how to return all 23 with a single query  Smiley

Oops! Of course - and I was at at least two of those Saints games! Grin

I thought Hull was a QF but you may well be right.

Duncan Platt looked even slower than I remember, a good thing Taity came along.

At Station Road and on the day the only semi final I was glad we lost.  I have never witnessed such a hostile atmosphere (worse than Fev v Widnes at the same ground) with the Hull fans even fighting amongst themselves and a policeman tumbling down the terraces.  Had we won, I genuinely feared for my safety as I was convinced the hordes of Hull fans would have ran across the pitch to wade into the Widnes spectators.

That was a bad atmosphere that day. My Dad my Brother and myself all got into scuffles and we was all in different parts of the ground.

didn't we loose the year after or year but one to saints at wigan. we were winning till about 5/10 mins from end and i was feeling on top of the world. Then John Myler tried a sneeky pass near the Saints line and it was i8ntersepted, they went the full lemgth of the field and converted to win the match. I was gitted, never had such a large mood swing in such a short space of time.

You're talking about "That semi" - 1989. You could trace our entire downfall to that game.... Cheesy

Either Holding or Jonathan Griffiths. What a depressing day that was.

start of my down fall, so depressed couldn't cut any coal till at least wednessday.

I had already booked london hotel before the fax semi and still went to final, didnt make same mistake 89...but could live without such mood swings. anybody remember the quater finals against wigan the year before? 2 dissalowed tries that should have stood,  one by Richie Eyres clearly over the line. Jim Smith was the ref, oh for vidieo reffs in those days
