Fair point about the number of games Shearer played at Widnes, but i cant recall him having a bad game? Look at the BEST 100 AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS EVER TO PLAY THE GAME IN THE LAST 100 YEARS. Wikipedia it! SHEARERS IN IT, THATS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. Dutton, Burke, Tait and Eckersley were good, but would ANY of them get into the best 100 British RL players ever? Doubt it.

Dunno where you got your info from but he aint in the NRL official top 100 players of all time he is not even fit to lace Graham Eadie's boots David Peachy didn't even make the top 100

Ricky Stuart misses Top 100
February 22, 2008
Australia’s 100 greatest Rugby League players were named today with Darren Lockyer the only current NRL player to make the prestigious list.

Only Laurie Daley, Andrew Ettingshausen, Bradley Clyde, Allan Langer, Brad Fittler, Andrew Johns, Shane Webcke and Lockyer from the 2000’s era made the side. While every list will be discussed and debated; many felt the omission of Ricky Stuart was one of the big mistakes; with the talented Raider a true standout in his era. While Clyde was a skillful and match winning player – his regular injury withdrawals problem didn’t allow him to reach consistent potential; we felt his spot may have been better suited to Stuart.

Players who retired in the 1990’s included Wayne Pearce, Gene Miles, Peter Sterling, Wally Lewis, Steve Roach, Brett Kenny, Mal Meninga, Terry Lamb, Steve Walters and Glenn Lazarus; all solid choices in this category.

Some of the 1980’s selections included Arthur Beetson, Tom Raudonikis, Graham Eadie, Steve Rogers, Mick Cronin, Ray Price, Steve Mortimer, Kerry Boustead and Eric Grothe.

A total of 38 players were selected from the pre-war years and 62 players from the post-war years.

Not had the best of luck of late has Dale. His Mrs died of cancer a couple of years ago, then he was critically injured in a car crash, then he was declared bankrupt. Not seen him in the News much lately so don't know how

A superb player, he was named in the Aussie Indigenous team of the century, on the wing.

Before any more insults get thrown around, perhaps it is worth spelling out that

Dale Shearer IS selected (on the wing) in the INDIGENOUS Australian RL team of the century 1908-2007 - see the black bar towards the bottom of this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Shearer

Dale Shearer is NOT selected as one of Australian RL's 100 greatest players - see this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_rugby_league%27s_100_greatest_players

Note that the 1st selection mentioned above is restricted to indigenous Australians.

Reading Micks list I see there was another great Aussie import that played for Widnes. Perhaps he was the greatest ever centre ever to play in the famous Black & White. He was superb until he touched the ball. His name was Steve Rogers. His Widnes career lasted just over 10 mins. But he's in the greatest 100 Aussies to play the game. So the greatest Centre we've ever had. Over to you WCC1989.
You just don't seem to get it Shearer Didn't play enough games to receive such an accolade. Great player? Yes. Great Fullback? Yes. Best we've ever had not in a million years.

It's all a matter of opinion surely? For natural ability, speed and skill I can't think of too many other players at Widnes in the last 40 years who could match him, but then he played only a handful of games and (as far as I'm aware) doesn't appear on any club honours list.

I interviewed Dale after that CC game at Keithley for the Chemics Hotline. Really nice humble bloke ( Not very Aus like ) who said quite rightly that the forwards won the game. Iterviewed my man of the match that day as well, Steve O'Neil. He was reputed to have spent over £2 listening to it on the phone when the coach spopped on way back.

For his size, and a crafty ciggy before kick off, Mick Burke was awesome and gets my vote--he could do everything.

Dutton played in an era when full backs, stayed back, and never ventured over the half way line, and at the time he was one of the best.

He had a very long reach from the half way line as he scored 13 tries and also kicked 10 dropped goals. Wink
