Seconded.
I was there too but can't find my programme. I had a "debate" with an Aussie Mate (Glenn Cameron, for those of you who remember him from standing in the way at every home game to take photos for the old Rugby Leaguer mag) who insists that that wasn't the first Aussie team, 'cos they always rested them for the tests.

He would say that wouldn't he, but I think he's 50% correct.

Australia played GB in the 1st test on the Saturday at Central Park, then us on the Wednesday. So it mostly was the players who didn't make the test team, although there a couple who did (Chris Anderson & Mick Cronin, for example).
The Warrington match was pretty much a 80 minute brawl, with Mike Nicholas at his worst. They didn't stick around for the after-match reception there, either. The test team had people like Tommy Raudonikis, Graham Eadie, Rod Reddy, Steve Rogers, Bobby Fulton, Kerry Boustead...

The media keep telling us that they could put 10 Aussie test teams out to one GB and win, so we'll take it that that '78 squad was all of International standard.
Stuart Wright got 2 for GB at Odsell so ended up with 3 tries against them in the series. Who was the last to score more than 3 in a series against the Aussies?

Probably Offiah, Hanley or Schofield

In 1986 i went to watch the cricket ashes in Aust. I visited Lang Park with some lads from Halifax and we met the club secretary (or some similar title) who told us he had toured England in 1978. When I put it to him that my home town team had beaten the Aussies on that tour he told me he didn't play at Widnes and couldn't remember his teammates losing there either. My memory has treated him with the same contempt because I don't remember his name.

that may be so, but isnt that what touring teams do, and why their record, nd our victory, are so special and cherished?

I remember it well the referee was Ronnie Moore of Wakefield the Aussies claimed he stepped back as the ball was played so he could give a penalty the headlines next day was No More Moore !! They were furious ! I refereed them on three occasions in three weeks on that tour Wales v Australia at Swansea Big Jim ' Paul Woods , Glyn Shaw in that Welsh team some match that was ! Gt Britain v Australia at Wigan the following Saturday and then the following Sunday Hull v Australia I was told after the the Wigan test match I would not be refereeing the next test at Bradford Even though this RL official told me I had refereed very well When I queried why he told me that the British hierarchy had it in for me because I had sent off Stevie Nash and Tom Radonikis for fighting when I said But they swapped about twenty punches each !! He said yes Ron but Nash was our best player !!! Try and work that one out I couldn't ! Ron Campbell ex ref

Great post Ron!
My memory is that one of the Aussie tries at Naughton Park was off a big forward pass but I might be biased in that.

Great post Ron, and good to see a legend on the board
On the subject of Paul Woods, I was told a while back, that he had sadly passed away due to cancer

Probably Offiah, Hanley or Schofield
Didn't Schofield score a hat-trick in one of the '86 tests at Central Park?
