Just watching Widnes v Canberra and he loves getting involved!

Another one of my favourite players as a nipper. Hard as nails. Underrated.

In the last 50 years we have probably had more good players at Stand Off than any position.

IMO we have had several more talented players in that position than David Hulme.

Tony Myler was the best and the only one who came anywhere near him was Kenny Gill, even if it was only for a short time.

Dennis O'Neill, Jules, Moran, Davies all had more skill than Hulme.

At Scrum Half - Gregory and Goulding.

As a coach - all bar Betts.

If I were to name the 2 best Widnes sides from the past 50 years, Hulme wouldn't even get on the bench

What you have to remember Beano is that you can in reality never have a team of outstanding talented players on the pitch at one time.
Every team needs a Hulme an Elwell a Dearden slightly less talented than some but wwho give their all in every game. IMO people picking the best 13 players is means nothing to me , if you want to pick a team then you shoild pick a starting 13 that has actually played together and if you do that then Hulme was part of the greatest team ever to grace Naughton Park

I think David was underrated. The feeling from the terraces for a lot of his career was that we needed more creativity at scrum half, and we were linked with plenty. However, David brought home his fair share of medals and, as has been said, was an integral part of our best ever side.
I can't remember many players who could match what David and Paul brought to the team in spades, guts, determinations, will to win, never say die etc. Those blokes were absolutely disgusted with defeat.

I agree David Hulme played in that great side, as did Currier, Paul Hulme and Richie Eyres.

It makes you wonder what that team would have been like if they were around today and trained full time.

I can't understand the meaning of this thread. In what way was David underated, the lad was Captain of his club & played for GB for God's sake. Isn't that the greatest accolade to play for your Country. To me an underated player is a player that doesn't get International recognition for his efforts. One such player was Reg Bowden probably the best uncapped Scrum Half this Country has ever had. Reg took over the Captains role after Doug Laughton retired & was the real catalyst at the start of reign as Cup Kings. Also when Reg was playing we didn't have the Superstars at the club that we did when David Hulme was at the club. Reg did it with mainly local lads. So David Hulme unsung hero NO. Reg Bowden YES.

If you apply that logic to this messageboard then there is no point either.

Definitely agree with your view there however, if you looked at the team at the time we had so many players that generated play from all over the park, Pike at prop, McKenzie at hooker, Kurt at 2nd row, Tony Myler at stand off, Jonathan Davies at full back or centre, we did not really need a creative scrum half, one would have been nice I agree and perhaps we could have got to Wembley a couple more times than did.

David Hulme may have, on the odd occasion, played at stand off but his position was always scrum half.  I should know.  I watched
him during al of his career at Widnes.  He was definately a specialist, never a journey man.  I remember when he and Paul were
selected for GB. to play New Zealand, (Kurt Sorensen was in the N.Z. side) GB. won an excellent match and the GB. manager
(not too sure who and I won't speculate) gave all of the team a big rap abd then he said " And the Hulme boys were just the
Hulme boys" nuff said.  By the way, I forgot to say David played at scrum half and Paul at stand off.

recall probably one of david hulmes finest hours being stand off for gb up against wally lewis as gb beat aus in 1988. paul hulme was hooker.

my memory must be weak but i never recall paul stand off professionally.

Neither do I. Even as a kid for Halton Hornets he never played Stand Off. He was always in the pack. I recall the game you are referring to. I recall Henderson Gill doing his jig in the corner after finishing a move that went the length of the field. It was probably the best performance by a GB team against the Aussie's in my lifetime.

Nor I.  I think, but I could be wrong, that he did play at Scrum Half once of twice at club level.

He was usually hooker or second row forward.
