Paul had an extended run at scrum half in 89/90, as well as deputising there on the odd occasion. Daid was stand-off at the time.

Neither do I. Even as a kid for Halton Hornets he never played Stand Off. He was always in the pack. I recall the game you are referring to. I recall Henderson Gill doing his jig in the corner after finishing a move that went the length of the field. It was probably the best performance by a GB team against the Aussie's in my lifetime.

Paul played at  7 for Halton Hornets , and rarely on the pack.

Sorry Vicar. As far as I remember going back to 1977/78 Under 14's Peter Halpin was Scrum Half, Barry Dowd Stand Off. Some fella called Rick Purcell was Left Centre. Keith Newton, Paul Hulme at Second Row & David Hulme at Loose Forward. Having said that I retired in 1979 so paul may have switched postions in future years. Peter Halpin was a talent, but I think he went to the Darker side & ended up being a Schoolboy International for the Kick & Clap Brigade. Shame really a wasted talent. I maybe wrong with the positions as it was well over 30 years ago. But I'm almost certain that's how it was.

Peter Halpin signed professional for Warrington and made one substitute appearance in 1983.

Sorry Rick. Paul played 2 years below that team , with Andy Currier and myself amongst others. In the team you name others of note include John Allen. I am certain that how it was despite it being over 30 years ago.

If I remember Paul used to train with us. Like you say 2 years above his age. I was there in Halton Hornets inaugural year. We only had the 1 team initially that was the Under 14's. I was one of the oldest players as my Birthday was in July & just scraped in. Paul definately trained with us, he must have just came up with their kid. I just asumed he played for us too. Thanks for the info Vicar.

I don't know why people keep comparing David Hulme with great Widnes stand offs'.  He was a scrum half,  A Scrum Half,
O.K. he played occasional times at stand off and never let the side down.  But he was a SCRUM HALF.  And I wish we had
him, or his like, today.

I remember Mike O'Neill saying that David Hulme was one of the hardest players he knew.  Played well above his weight and rock solid in a tackle.

Got a mention in the Guardian "Birthdays" section today - David Hulme, rugby league player 48 alongside the likes of Darren Bent, 28, Mike Batt composer 62, Zsa Zsa Gabor 95, Denis Norden 90, Axel Rose, singer 50. So happy birthday to David and well done to be mentioned in such illustrious company

Hulmey was definately hard as iron. I remember when we played the Joe's in a 5th year RU game when I was at Fisher. he tackled me and I can only describe it as like being messed up with a lump hammer. It made me realise my limitations on the rugby field. Not only his toughness though, he was so clever. Directing the game. Head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch. He was tremendous for Widnes, as was Paul. Every team needs a set of Hulme Bros and for me, that side is a stand-out great team.
