Can I reiterate that this initiative is more to develop community  than provide on going musical accompaniament for the team during matches. I doubt if all of those who sign up to the band will want to play throughout any game as that would stop them watching and enjoying the game themselves, but they may want to help with the atomsphere building at the start of the game and maybe to lead celebrations -which we hope there will be a few this season.

However, lets be realistic, all who have volunteered so far are complete novices and so will not have the confidence to come along and burst into the trumpet voluntary or any other such virtuoso performance for quite some time.

Just to re-state the thinking behind this initiative is to engage with local people and show them how having a professional and successful sports club in the area can offer more than one form of social enjoyment - particularly for those who don't 'get' the value of RL at all. Hopefully the fun they get from meeting people who do enjoy the game will lead them to trying out the matchday experience for themselves and maybe their families.

Brilliant idea. You can't beat a first class Brass Band.  For my sins played in what is now called " The Dyke Band ", when I was in it we were to give us our full title. John Foster & Sons, Black Dyke Mills Band and then ended up in The Central Band R.A.F.

Well that's the tutor sorted and hoss, leitman and Abacab have been offered their lessons - do let me know back guys please
I have also been contacted by a tuba player and a young lad of nine wants to have a go at the trumpet. So it's slowly coming together with three trumpeters, tuba (possibly) player, saxophonist and a possible baritone horn

Still room for more, cornets, flugelhorn, trombone, percussionists would start to add depth and variety.

Well first three lessons completed - our trumpeters seemed to have found the sessions 'fun' although harder work than they probably expected.

Next weekend is the last chance before Christmas to get yourself started on this 'musical odyssey'

don't forget there is no age restriction - we had one little lad of 8 who came along with his own Trumpet this weekend and his mum said he really enjoyed himself.

Called in last week and was really impressed by the Tutors and the organisation of the Lessons, Piano, Brass, Guitar, violin,even singing Lessons

Tthanks for the positive feedback VOH the take up has been really good however unexpectedly many have been people wanting to learn keyboards and guitar which makes taking things to the game a little difficult. We have some really improving brass players in particular our WV fan who has adopted the baritone horn and one young lad who has really taken to the trumpet who may be persuaded to come along to the matches but I dont think they will be ready for the first game.

The only worry I have is that the take up has been so good that my funding will run out before the band can come together fully, which is why I am busy writing bids to grant makers at the present time.

What has also been encouraging are the emails from the music co-ordinator at the 6th form college who has advised the A level students of the initiative, and a really great offer of support from a gentleman who is head of music at a school outside of the borough but who studied at Fairfield school and really backs the need for more music in the area. More interestingly, a gentleman who plays in the Liverpool ukulele orchestra has offered to help with lessons and form a ukulele band with black and white ukuleles, with logos on - they are easy to learn and would certainly be something different to other clubs bands - any interest from our board members?

Mini-me has just got a Ukulele, she would definately be interested if this is still something you are considering.
