BARLA BULLDOGS GO DOWN IN SEMIS TO EVENTUAL TOURNAMENT WINNERS AT DUBAI 7’S
Day 3 of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens saw the BARLA Bulldogs battle bravely before going down in the semi finals against the star-studded Christina Noble Children’s Foundation Vets side, which later went on to claim their fifth consecutive International Vets title (defeating Xodus Steelers 28-0).
The BARLA Bulldogs gave it their all with some terrific defending in the first half and had limited chances to show what they could do with ball and trailed 7-0 at the break. It was the same story in the second half as the Bulldogs conceded a further two converted tries including one from former rugby league and union international Henry Paul to go down 21-0.
Although upset at the loss the Bulldogs gave their all against a team that didn’t concede a point throughout this tournament and can take heart that they gave them the best game in three days of competition and reached the semi finals for the first time.
Bulldogs Coach Mark Hewitt,
“We played without the ball and had to constantly defend and tackle and everyone gave one hundred and ten per cent. We went out to a great team with some great former international stars of rugby union and league. On behalf of the players and the rest of the coaching staff I would like to thank BARLA for the opportunity of playing against sides in the world at the Dubai Seven’s”
BARLA Great Britain International Manager Mick Turner,
“It has been a fantastic week for BARLA which started off with the historic first ever rugby league international against Pakistan who were making their bow at international level. This has continued n the Dubai Seven’s which saw our Lions reach the quarter finals of their competition and the Bulldogs reach the semi final stages for the first time in our three years involvement.
“We are getting better each year and gaining respect from the players and teams we have played and both squads have been a credit to rugby league and the country and I would like to congratulate everyone for their efforts.”
BARLA BULLDOGS: Darren Carter (Capt) (Barrow Island), Craig McKinnon (Barrow Island), Neil McCartney (Wath Brow Hornets), Steve Bird (Bank Quay Bulls), Gary Fletcher (Leigh East), Darren McKinnon (Widnes St Maries), Saffer Jama (Leigh East), Lee Kelly (Queensbury), Jimmy Walker (West Hull), Mark Hewitt (West Hull),Johan Windley (West Hull), Steve Morton (Queens), Simon Marsden (Keighley ARLFC),Garry Woodcock (Crigglestone All Blacks)
CHRISTINA NOBLE CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION: Jon Evans, Lee James, Dafyd James, Kingsley Jones, Henry Paul, Chris Shearsby, Kevin Yates, Appollo Perellini, Trevor Leota, Rich Smith, Jim Jenner, Paul Volley, Mike Friday, Frazer Waters, Marcus Seusey.
