The annual Cumbrian derby to be held on Boxing Day has been postponed because Workington can't raise a team I thought that only happened in the Amateur game

What a shame. Been to Workington a few times, traditional as it's gets.
Makes you wonder though why everyone cries out for a Cumbrian SL side, the game isn't as strong up there as it used to be. Evidently so.

A part of the problem is that most of the heavy industry has gone. The same problem exists at Barrow.

They have loads of quality amateur sides up there. I know they have the rivalry and it's easy to say when your not living in the area but it makes so much sense to have 1 Cumbrian regional side in SL. It would be good for both the area bringing in visiting fans in larger numbers. Making a weekend trip to the lakes/staying in hotels whilst going up for the game.
Also RL in general as it would give a pathway for amateur players in Cumbria to be full time pro instead of semi pro holding down a full time day job. And hence giving the England team a bigger pool of elite players to select from. Catalans did the same, they are a regional side in a rugby league hotbed and I believe many fans of the smaller local French sides follow them?

There are good amateur sides in Rochdale, Leigh etc. Doesn't mean giving them a SL team would improve things. No one would want to see a merged SL club and the clubs currently there aren't strong enough. There are pathways in place for good Cumbrian players to play SL currently, just like there is everywhere else for the players that are good enough.

[/b] Simply not true - most of the other clubs fans aren't fans of Catalans and we actually got talking to 4 or 5 of them at the game in 09 and they were supporting Widnes. We asked if they were Catalans fans and didn't like toulouse and they were supporters of Limoux and they hate both teams

Well I'm sure 4 or 5 is a very representative sample of the Catalans fans

Workington lost half a dozen players to Barrow recently. This combined with injuries means that they cannot field a side that will be competitive on Boxing Day. Still disappointing for a professional club not to be able to field a side for a bank-holiday derby game.

But the comment from Dan has no evidence whereas mine does even if it is only of 4 or 5 people. When they do straw polls in politics etc. they only interview a few hundred people but this is meant to represent the opnion of the country where there are possibly 30 million people who can vote. Some evidence is better than none.

My evidence is 8,500 Catalan fans going to games, more than many English Superlegaue sides get. Also the 5 Limoux fans were at a game not involving their team, bit like watching Catalans or Cumbria in SL?

But my point is that these fans still support their original club and do not go and watch a club that has been formed. It's like when it was mooted about Widnes and Warrington merging how many people would have watched the new Cheshire team? Lots of people would likely have wanted to watch a feeder Widnes team. Yes there are lots of Catalans fans but that is a region that doesn't cover places like Toulouse, Limoux etc.
