North Wales Crusaders have signed local Wrexham-based centre Rob Massam from Chester Gladiators for the 2012 season.

The 24-year old has also been playing rugby union for Oswestry, turning out for the last time this weekend, scoring a hat-trick of tries in their 41-0 win over Isle of Man Vagabonds.

Salisbury born, but has lived in Wrexham since he was one year old, Massam is an England Lionhearts international, and became famous in 2010 after scoring the winning try in England's 34-30 win over Wales Dragonhearts in Somerset.

He scored against Wales Dragonhearts again this year in Caerphilly but was unable to stop the Welsh from winning 30-24 and lifting the trophy.

Massam started his Rugby League as a youngster with the now defunct North Wales Coasters. He has also played for Wrexham rugby union club.

"I'm really delighted to have signed for North Wales Crusaders who really are my local club," said Massam. "I was brought up in Gwersyllt and I now live near to the Racecourse so I can't wait to play there.

"This is a big opportunity for me and I'm looking forward to the challenge. I know that I've got to train hard and learn from Clive Griffiths and the coaches. They've lot of experience, as have others around me so I just can't wait to get started."

Yeah he is, has always been a standout player at Chester which was recognised with him being selected for the Lionhearts.

Should do well there.

Chester are a fairly new club and have developed well over the last few years, nobody is saying that they are a Super League team but to have their first player signed professionally is a big step. Having played with Rob at Chester I have every confidence he'll make a good fist of it with Crusaders.

Good to see a recognition of the need for a development policy - good luck to the lad - hope he makes a go of it.

What's with the shouting? There's also rules regarding inappropriate and unnecessary comments aimed at individuals.
If you're not interested in the development of amateur clubs and their players then don't read the thread!

The lad comes from a club that a number of members of a strong Widnes RL family help set up and play a large part in during its early days so other than a development area signing for a pro club there is a local interest too.
