You'd wonder how any professional player could get involved in anything with Bernard Long... his reputation is shocking!

I know the story was only Gleeson's side of things, but personally I believe that he has been very unlucky throughout this - which I think the UKAD board have aknowledged by reducing his ban. I think the real worry that the whole squad had been taking the supplement shows that Gleeson was hardly doing this in someway to gain an unfair advantage over others + many players had been taking it as part of their general diet regime. When it was anounced that Gleeson had been banned, people were calling him a drug cheat like he'd been beefing up on steroids or something.
I think its good that Gleeson has at least tried to put the record straight, but I fear in doing so, he may have burnt any remaining bridges that he may have had. Mind you clubs are in that desperate need of good players that he may get one last shot for next year - I hope so anyway.

Two full pages in the Mail on Sunday headed " A web of lies has destroyed my career and the RFL were part of the whole thing "
If you read the article in full, it would not surprise me if:-
Around 7 or 8 players at Hull were taking the pills
And that the RFL were aware of that fact and failed to inform UKAD as quickly as they should.
The article states that " Emma Rosewarne who has been RFL head of anti-doping for 22 years, has confirmed that she knew more about the circumstances of the case than she had passed on to UKAD at the appropriate time."
Gleeson admits he was wrong, but is bitter about the punishment. It seems others may have escaped.

Surely the answer to this is simple.....
The RFL provides a list of
products
that are acceptable and approved by UK anti doping agency. Any player using anything other than those approved
products
runs the risk of being banned.
The problem here, apart from the conspiracy to keep it all quiet, was that the player received a product containing a banned substance. These people are not scientists. I know that asprin and parcentemol have the same effect but what they are I have no idea... if I could take one, I could take the other. Gleeson reckons he was okayed to take it by a doctor...through Sean Long... but even doctors screw up and are not impartial when it comes to club loyalty. Let's close it all down... stop the confusion, stop leaving it to players, club doctors, clubs, mates of players.... have a list of
products
and be done with it.
Oh and a life ban to anyone named LONG.... his dad did a runner for this kind of activity long ago..... enough said.

What? So, the whole squad is taking it (allegedly) but only Gleeson gets a ban and the story is swept under the carpet?
Is that what's being said?

To be fair they do have a list of banned substances and one of them was apparently clearly in the ingredients of the product in question on this occasion.

In the piece it mentions about a Warrington player failing a drugs test, is it refering to last year during the Gleeson affair or was it refering to Bernard Longs involvement in 2004?

My views on drugs in sport have been well documented on here, and my opinion has changed not a single jot, but....................
Would the Daily Wail (mis-spelling intentional) be as ready to give the same amount of column inches to
good
RL news? It seems to just
delight
in putting down the Greatest Game on the Planet when there's pooh knocking about!
Or is Spelly wearing his cynical hat again?
