If Steve O'Connor decided to start up a footie team playing at the Stobart Stadium what division would they have to start out in and if it is some obscure league how far below the football league would that be.

Widnes did have a football team before the war. It was mostly composed of people who used to work in the shops and played on Thursday afternoons.  There were usually more people playing than watching.

Watching grade 2 rugby has been tough enough for most of the time. I fell asleep watching Liverpool - Man U yesterday, gawd knows what grade 12 football would be like.

I've often thought this myself, seeing how SOC loves footy. Assuming you start right at the bottom and work your way up the fooball league pyramid, it takes years to even get to the Conference North. That is assuming you are winning your league continually and your facilities are up to scratch. Obviously wouldn't be a problem if the team was playing at the Stobart. Had a look on the football league website, some leagues have layer upon layer of divisions. I am a rugby league supporter through and through, but would love to see Widnes have it's own football team.

When FC United started out a few years ago, they were admitted to the North West Counties League - Now known as Evostick

Above them is Evostick Premier, then its Conference North ( Known as Blue Sqare ),then its Conference Premier, then its Football League 2

So if they started in 2012 in Evostick North

2013 Evostick Premier

2014 Blue Square North

2015 Blue Square Premier

2016 Football League 2

2017 Football League 1

2018 Championship

2019 Premier League

The starting point in the North West Counties used to be called The Lacashire Combination, and I well remeber watching Prescot Cables V Wigan Athletic

It can be done

I think the idea is a pleasant daydream for sports fans in Widnes - a really good 'what if'.

Funny thing is though - as soon as we joined Evostick North (thanks for the explanation of the likely path Beano btw), we would have someone on here straight away saying 'why don't we sign Messi now !!!'  Grin Wink

I wouldn't we're a Rugby League town. I can't wait for the day that Wigan Athletic get relegated. I've been wishing & hoping for the last 6 or 7 years for this to happen & I think this year I may get my wish. There's plenty of Football teams within 30 miles of Widnes. You've got the 2 most famous & decorated clubs in English Football history within an hour train ride. So why on earth would you want to watch a Football team based in the 4th most successful Rugby League in England is beyond me. It's bad enough our has to try & compete on an unlevel playing field with Kick & Clap. So the last we need is the Round Ball game interfering with our aspirations of building a world class Rugby League team down here again.

Perhaps Rick its just because people would LIKE a team> What is your fixation with Wigan Athletic ?
As for there being plenty of football teams in a 30 mile radius the same can be said for RL, does that mean we aint entitled to have our own team ?
For somebody who hates the round ball game i fail to understand why you get involved in the footie threads  Shocked

We have the facilities we have the pitch we have thousands of football lovers and a football mad chairman------are you reading this SOC ?

Oh and BTW heard a rumour that the Wids may play a few times on our new pitch  Wink

Doesn't matter, I have it on good authority that the stadium wasn't built for the Vikings, it was all a big conspiracy by HBC so that in a few years time, once all the hype died down about costs they could start a football club which would begin its assualt on the football league!!

Forgot to add, with S'OC as the new manager due to the fact he is only in the chairman role of the Vikings as a cover story!
