I wouldn't we're a Rugby League town. I can't wait for the day that Wigan Athletic get relegated. I've been wishing & hoping for the last 6 or 7 years for this to happen & I think this year I may get my wish. There's plenty of Football teams within 30 miles of Widnes. You've got the 2 most famous & decorated clubs in English Football history within an hour train ride. So why on earth would you want to watch a Football team based in the 4th most successful Rugby League in England is beyond me. It's bad enough our has to try & compete on an unlevel playing field with Kick & Clap. So the last we need is the Round Ball game interfering with our aspirations of building a world class Rugby League team down here again.

I'm sure the fact there is no Premiership League football team in Yorkshire helps the attendances of their Rugby League clubs.

Perhaps Rick its just because people would LIKE a team> What is your fixation with Wigan Athletic ?
As for there being plenty of football teams in a 30 mile radius the same can be said for RL, does that mean we aint entitled to have our own team ?
For somebody who hates the round ball game i fail to understand why you get involved in the footie threads  Shocked

We have the facilities we have the pitch we have thousands of football lovers and a football mad chairman------are you reading this SOC ?

Oh and BTW heard a rumour that the Wids may play a few times on our new pitch  Wink
My fixation with Wigan Athletic should be self explanitory. Whelan tried to convert Wigan into a Football town. That should be enough of an explaination. I wanted him to fail from day one. Which is within my rights.
Wigan is the town that put RL on the map. I dare say if it wasn't for Wigan RLFC the sport would be even less attractive to other parts of the Country than it already is. Love the pies or hate them they're box office & I dare say you could go anywhere in Britain & ask what is Wigan famous for? They would say Rugby. Maybe not all would which type of Rugby but they would still say Rugby. Whelan has tried to take that legacy away from the town & the sport. Hopefully relegation from the Prem, will stop him trying anymore.

Er no The RL team would still be playing at central park if it where not for Wigan Athletican DW.

Incidently WA did not join the football league til 1977/8 ish and their rise to the top flight should be commended
IMO the more north west clubs in the premier league the better.will you be missing the pies away game out of your loyalty to RL and will you stop attending the stobart if we form a footy team or because the kick and clap game is gonna be played there ?

I do commend them. It was a great achievement for them. But they've had their time at the top. Honeymoon over a bit like Gateshead & other expansion clubs in RL. Once Whelan goes that'll be it for Wigan Athletic. As for the bit about Wigan RLFC would be here if it wasn't for Whelan how wrong you are. Whe Latics where on their knees & going to close until Whelan stepped in,. Their ground was disheveled up for sale & everything was going womanly-curves up So Whelan went cap in hand to the Rugby club & asked them to sell Central Park so he could realise his dream of building a new stadium. He couldn't have done it otherwise.

As for the comments about will I miss the game against The Pies because Soccer is played at their place. Whats that supposed to mean? Soccer won't being played when Widnes are there so why would not go. I'm not anti Football BTW, FFS I used watch Liverpool home & away until I got married. But I could either carry on watching Liverpool or Widnes one had to go & I'm affraid Football lost hands down. My reasons for not wanting Whelan to succeed are simple as I stated in my first post. There are enough obsticles in the way of my favourite sport as it is & I don't like to see it threatened by so called Cuckoo's in the nest. Which is how I see Wigan Athletic. So hence that's why I wouldn't want Widnes go down the same route. I don't think there's anything wrong with my logic or my motives behind my thought's. Let's just say I'm protecting my patch.

No Mick I love my Rugby League & just couldn't live without it. If you love something enough you'd do anything to protect it. It's a bit your kids really if you feel their life is being threatened you'd try to stop it from happening. Wouldn't you?

Rick, I think you have a bit of a job on your hands.

Not only are you hoping to see Wiigan Athletic go to the wall, I suppose you hope the same for Oldham Athletic, Huddersfield Town, Hull City, Wrexham, Barrow FC, Rochdale, Halifax, Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford, Sheffield United, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham etc etc etc

Not sure this one has been fully thought out yet mate to be honest. I'm not sure that protecting rugby league at all costs is a really viable idea. I think there may be one or two things more important in life even to ardent sports fans.

I do have to say though that from a daydream about a footy team to kids having their lives threatened in a page and a half is damn good entertainment - once again I think we have shown why this must be one of (if not) the best sports forums in the entire universe  Grin

Whisper it quietly but Melbourne is only considered the sporting capital of the world by people who live in erm ...... Melboune.   Grin.

You have a horse race and a game played by about 30 people outside of Melbourne, which nobody else is really interested in, everything else you have is played better elsewhere.
