At 65 minutes their was only a whisker between the two sides. Widnes had lost their captain and driving force (Clarke) earlier in the game and then had Cross sent to the bin. Only then did Wakefield take control. Widnes had at least two tries disallowed and Dean brought back for a doubtful forward pass. For the first competetive game of the season ~i thought they did well for the majority of the game and we know that we will improve as the season progresses..

I knew that we were going to struggle tonight when clarke was named as
When we had the 10mins of sustained pressure in the 1st half we were predictable
The ball was very slow gettin across the pitch,we were so easy to defend against
If,when our 1st choice 6 is injured,we stick a close to past it 9 there,we are gonna struggle
Im getting slightly worried, but as I keep telling my 5yr old,WTID

one team doesnt have a set of moaning
kit-kats
for fans?
So you was delighted with our performance, was you?
Listen mate any person who pays their money can whinge all they want if they don't think they're getting value for it.
Will you be making comments like tis if come September our stats read Played 26 won zero drawn zero lost 26? If this does happen & its quite possible going on what we saw tonight, would we have the right to moan then? Or are you another one of J20's rose tinted crew who thinks everything is great at the club?
Speaking of which no post's from him so far tonight. He must be thinking of some
cow-spangles
to write for us all, as to why we couldn't beat the worst team in the competition allegedly.

I have 3 comments to make about tonight.
1. Never been a fan of Dave Allen but tonight I have to take my hat off to him, his workrate was superb, and without a doubt his leaving the game was reason 1 we went downhill. We just never looked the same without him. He never returned - is he injured?
2. Fitness must be addressed. We were told Brewer was the best. I've seen 3 matches now and we are not fit enough IMO - the last 20 minutes we begin to fade rapidly. I am shocked by this as this should have been addressed.
3. We were slow. Wakefield were fast - fast at play the ball, better advancing attacks, quick movement of the ball around the pitch and far far more creativity. We were slow, and play wasn't inspirational.
Not pointing the finger at anybody. But this is SL, we have what I consider to be a good squad (I'm not disappointed with any signings on an individual basis) and we are now full time. Our first game in the competition and we must dig in, learn and pick up!
Hope that we are not experiencing any new injuries and that the lads can pick up from tonight and move forward positively to next week's game. Good effort from one and all.

Any team defending that much with only 1/4 of the ball for 25/30 mins would get tired!!

Stupid comments like this really
galaxy
me off! How the
galaxy
is Clive brewer supposed to coach super league match fitness??? You can do all the fitness training in the world but until you get on the pitch against the super league opposition it is hard to tell how much is enough!!
There is absolutely no substitution for match fitness and that will only come with time on the pitch!

No I'm not I've watched Widnes for over 40 years. So you can't even imagine what I've senn or not seen. All I want is a team that play's for the shirt & make me smile now & again. Nothing wrong with that methinks. I got it tonight for about 40 minutes but I want it for 80 minutes. I don't think I'm asking for too much do you?

I think its going to take us 6/7 games just to get up with the pace and collision of super league as our forwards seems to just put them down and jump up giving them a roll on which maybe there just worried about giving penalties away because probably all pre season all the coaches have drilles into them is the speed of the game or maybe they're just not sure of what they can get away with... And when we have the ball were busy trying to out muscle 3 tacklers and getting dominated instead of finding elbows and Knees and getting a quick play the ball tryong to get a roll on...
Negatives pace!!! our wingers both look like there running in treakle... And ah van is only in because he kicks goals and he cant even do that... Wingers should be flynn an marsh with phelps and isa centres
Positive are we've still got 6 of our 1st choice 17 to come back in And also not many teams will go 80 mimutes giving 1 or 2 penalties away so credit to wakefield... And youngsters mullally and craven both went well as did allen and marsh did ok...

effort couldnt be faulted but what was apparent was that at this level discipline has to be better . a pair of half backs is a must hanbury had a great first half but wakey completely shut him down second half and we need to convert pressure into points. missing 3 deffo starters and with the two lads to come in we can only improve. enjoyed the game to evenly matched sides tim smith the difference and they ran in a couple late on when we where down to 12 and had lost a couple of our best players on the night.

Last year and tonight, we never seem to have a plan B. The players come out, give it loads, work hard, loads of effort and enthusiasm and it all looks good.
But then the opposition start to read it and stop it and we just cannot adapt during a game. It may be 1 game into this season but its the same problem we had for all of last season with a different set of players.
The opposition foil our plan A and there is no plan B.
I cannot find fault with the effort and application of a single one of our players tonight. Its just a shame that they didn't seem to apply it together in an organised way. Who's fault is that?

You maybe correct with this statement. but the problem is then we'll be playing the likes of Wire, Stains & Wigan. So we'll have to find even more. Can we do this?

Why did we not take the two very kickable penalties in the first half when the scores where tight ?
Pathetic judgement not to take them
