Totally agree! Some of the conversions he has missed have a long way off the mark (ie the one out wide on Friday)

We'd have been 8 point closer to Stains too at LP.  Grin

Jack Owens seemed to be able to kick from the touchline in similarly cold conditions on the i-pitch yesterday.

Jack Owens is a better goalkicker.  Ah Van needs to practice on his distance.

I suppose they are concentrating on Ah Van because he is thought the more likely player to be on the field for 80 minutes each game. Craven on the other hand may not always be in the 17.

Craven may of course demand a place before long, but you would think with Watts and Briscoe to come back it may be a while off.

I think the disappointment was that his attempts from wide out were poor I dont think either of them actually made it past the try line. There should also be a rule that you dont attempt the conversion of your own tries as invariably you miss, I don't know why this happens maybe too much adrenalin is pumping through the system after scoring a try.  I noticed that he wasn't putting too many through the uprights when he was practising before the game so maybe his touch had deserted him last night.

He clearly is an accomplished kicker and should be able to master kicking from everywhere at the Stobart

WV surely you have had a brain fart there, Nanyn , Davies, Currier,Burke or to expand further and nearer present day Foster at Sts ,just some
names that scored trys and had no trouble kicking the goals.. The fact is Ah Van is not a reliable kicker, if Craven is on the pitch he should kick the goals because he's a better kicker.

I remember Davies going 80 yards at Salford one day and taking ages to line up the kick because he was knackered but he still slotted it over from wide out.Ah Van scored from 80 inches.

Any player can have off days, especially from out wide. Only if this continues to be an issue would I look at changing it.

However always wondered why Craven seems easily replaced as front line kicker as always seemed excellent to me. Unless they are trying to reduce pressure on the lad (rightly or wrongly).

Probably because Craven may not start every week. Ah Van in the last 2 games has played very well but his goal kicking has been poor at best . He hasnt kicked a goal from outside 20 mts each side of the sticks.

Grin Grin Grin OK V I concede that when we have a real top drawer kicker this tends not to be a problem (likewise for other teams), but my gut feeling is that in recent seasons it has been a problem for us. I cant quote any stats but my sense is that there is a bigger chance of a failed conversion attempt off a players own try than converting someone else's from similar distances/angles.

Oh yeah I get that this season though meant in past 2 seasons since debuted also. Though obviously Tyrer class kicker too.

I think simply it's a better option than having a lad only kicking when 1/13 players on the pitch scores and can't get line / rhythm etc.

Ridiculous, the kicker for every team is always going to be the top scorer!

Only if they go over!!

We were watching Ah Van when he was out practising before the match and he looked a dodgy kicker, technique looked poor.  I'm sure we must have better options in the squad.  One the other hand I liked him a lot as a player, though he looked way better than the few TV games I saw him pay for Bradford last season.
