Looking at this, it seems like the ipitch is the softer option.

Just bit of Under Armour should cure the problem, and maybe over the knee socks. it's not rocket science is it?

No its not rocket science.

But to suggest that some sort of protective ware is required, indicates that there must be a problem

Yes, but a bit of knee and elbow protection will ensure we get revenue from 7 day use of the pitch, rather than turn to grass and have a pitch used less than 20 times a season.

yes - whenever rugby league is played in sub zero temperatures, there is a good risk of scraping / grazing your knees and elbows.

By the sound of it, some watering of the pitch may help?

Mate, I hate to look like I'm picking on you but... are you aware that the pitch is made up of a rubber granules base and plastic matting with plastic blades of grass?... How can you suggest watering will help?  Shocked

Apparently the pitch can be watered also to 'zip up' the speed of the surface.

So here's the go:

The I-pitch is flat and hard. It has a rubber granuled base. The plastic filaments representing grass blades are soft.

A grass pitch when dry - in July/August. Will be hard, slightly rutted, made up of granulated soil on top of a concrete-like base. Covered in grass that is soft but may contain dead / dying blades that are sharp edged.

A grass pitch when icy - will be hard, slightly rutted with frozen sharp edged ruts. Covered in grass that has its water content frozen.

A grass pitch when wet- in March / April . Will be soft and muddy. Covered in grass that is soft. There will be unpredictable bounce and waterlogged pitches will be unplayable.

So In Feb - On a night like Friday
- The I-pitch is is flat and hard. It has a rubber granuled base. The plastic filaments representing grass blades are soft.
- A grass pitch when icy - will be hard, slightly rutted with frozen sharp edged ruts. Covered in grass that has its water content frozen.

Player Safety: I-Pitch wins
Playing Surface: I-Pitch wins due to flatness

In April, damp evening
- The I-pitch is is flat and hard. It has a rubber granuled base. The plastic filaments representing grass blades are soft.
- A grass pitch when wet- in March / April . Will be soft and muddy. Covered in grass that is soft. There will be unpredictable bounce and waterlogged pitches will be unplayable.

Player Safety: Grass Pitch wins
Playing Surface: I-Pitch wins due to playability, consistency

In July / August, dry evening
- The I-pitch is is flat and hard. It has a rubber granuled base. The plastic filaments representing grass blades are soft.
- A grass pitch will be hard, slightly rutted, made up of granulated soil on top of a concrete-like base. Covered in grass that is soft but may contain dead / dying blades that are sharp edged.

Player Safety: i-Pitch wins just because of grass itself
Playing Surface: I-Pitch wins due to playability, consistency

What we see most by this analysis is that at all times the i-pitch is the same whereas the grass surface is "good" for only 1/3 of the season. The i-pitch does however demonstrate worse qualities of player safety during the wet period of spring.

** I did have "astro turf" similar (but not as expensive) at my previous home - same base etc. **

My daughter started playing volleyball on a similar surface last year, after a few spectacular dives and some painful grazes she started wearing knee pads and taping her elbows.  No drama, no tweets, just a bit of common sense, and since then no grumbles either!

Perhaps she could go into consultancy;)

Ha ha ha and if it rains it'll get wet.... but it will not change the hardness of the rubber granule & sand based pitch unlike a soil based pitch.

Knee and elbow pads will not be required. Not being funny but the I pitch will look amazing on tv. However when you see 26 men running round with little pads all over the body it wouldn't look like. Vaseline and long sleeve under armour hopefully will do the trick. The grazes and cuts will become an issue but the club have paid half a million on it, we have to bget on with it.

For me, it looks great and its always slowly bringing revenue in for the club.

I'd rather land on a rain coveted pitch then a frost covered one though!

Must admit ATM I'd be looking at the cold as a major factor in 'grazes' right bow then simply the pitch itself.
