In 2007 Widnes Vikings were saved from administration by local businessman, Steve O’Connor and the concern for the financial stability of the club disappeared. Because of this, Trust in Widnes has decided to focus its current work to support the growth of youth and amateur RL development, alongside bridging the gap between the club and the community, by providing inclusive community events that show the wider value of the club to the residents of the borough.

We believe our club represents the very best of the community it plays in, and can act as a symbol for everyone in that community to support. Trust in Widnes is about making that really happen. It's usually the fans who care most about these things as they often live in the community, and they want to see the local kids walking around the town centre wearing the local club shirt rather than a football club  miles away.

Rugby League fosters a sense of community unique in professional sport. It brings together friends and family, young and old, from all walks of life. Now this ethos has moved one step further

What do we do?

We sponsor and offer practical assistance to local youth and amateur RL teams

We run community events for carers, elderly and young people to offer them access to the social inclusion that being a part of RL fans groups offers.

We have developed educational programmes to help young people learn about health lifestyles and civic pride.

What is a supporters trust?
The basic definition of a Trust is a democratic, not-for-profit organisation of supporters, committed to strengthening the voice for supporters in the decision making process at a club, and strengthening the links between the club and the community it serves.

Why do Widnes Vikings fans need a Supporters Trust?
Widnes RLFC is a club steeped in tradition, In 1895, Widnes were founder members of the Northern Union which broke away from the rugby union to create the sport of rugby league. Rugby League is one of the few sports which were truly based on community support; many RL clubs relied on local people
‘purchasing’ a share in the club.

Today this situation hasn’t changed, supporters continue to have a vested interest in the success and financial sustainability of their club, and the best way to help achieve this is as a group through a Supporters Trust

Supporters’ Direct
Is a national organisation set up as a Government initiative to improve the governance and financial sustainability of football clubs. The success of the sharing of best practice and professional support and advice to members has resulted in several other sports supporters deciding to become members of the Supporters Direct umbrella group
